A historic quarry offering stunning views, fascinating geology, and stories of local cultural heritage.

Bjørndal Limestone Quarry – geology, history, and panoramic views
Bjørndal Limestone Quarry is located about 1 km north of Uglev on Thyholm, situated atop the Uglev Salt Dome at an elevation of 30 meters. The limestone surface lies beneath a thin layer of glacial moraine.
At the site, there is an information and rest area where tourists and locals can enjoy their coffee and take in the magnificent views from the 8-meter-high observation tower. The information cabinet tells the story of historical limestone extraction and the development of shelterbelts, offering insight into cultural heritage and everyday work past and present.
The elevated limestone forms a domed landscape, which, together with the lower-lying limestone at the coastal cliff Odby Klint, clearly demonstrates the effect of an uplifted salt structure. Despite several glacial advances and resulting erosion, the central part rises about 30 meters above the visible limestone at Odby Klint.
There were originally four limestone quarries in the area, but this is the last one that remained active, producing building lime until 1942 and agricultural lime until 1957. Limestone extraction at the site dates back to the early 1700s, when farmers used lime to fertilize otherwise barren fields. With the agricultural reforms, the production of agricultural lime increased significantly.
The large amounts of flint left over from the quarrying were widely used by locals as foundation stones for farm buildings, as bases for manure heaps, and as fencing around fields and gardens.
