Breum Holy Spring – Nature’s mystery and human hope

Breum Holy Spring has been considered sacred for centuries. One reason is that the water defies nature’s order – it flows upward, where water usually flows downward.
The spring maintains a nearly constant temperature year-round, which has long been seen as mysterious and healing.
Although the water likely had no medical effect, belief in its power brought comfort – a kind of natural placebo.
Breum Holy Spring was probably a pilgrimage site both before and after the arrival of Christianity, and it’s likely that trade and gatherings took place here.

Grinderslev Church stands on the hill above the spring – perhaps because the site has held special meaning for generations.
