On the northern side of Thyholm lies a vast, protected area of coastal meadow.
To protect the many breeding birds, access is prohibited from April 1st to July 1st.
The area is a fine example of ongoing land formation shaped entirely by nature. Near the coast, curved spits are actively forming, and the small lakes on the foreland were likely created when such spits previously enclosed shallow areas. Large parts of the coastal meadow are flooded during high tides. Parallel to the coast runs a dry beach ridge, separating the salt meadow from the freshwater meadow, which stretches inland to cliffs up to 8 meters high – once the Stone Age coastline.
The protected area hosts a rich flora and diverse birdlife. Surveys show that at least 14 species of swimming and wading birds breed here. Notable migratory birds include the wigeon, golden plover, and dunlin.
