Light artwork ”The Assembly House”

With a view of the Limfjord, the sound art installation Forsamlingshuset is erected in Oddesund.
In the spirit of the original Danish assembly house tradition, the sound artwork invites people to gather – this time in forest, heath, and dune landscapes. The installation is part of a larger art project across four municipalities in Central and Western Jutland. In Oddesund, the inauguration of the artwork will be celebrated on September 10th with a speech by the mayor, a choir concert, and a poetry workshop.

The Assembly House – Where Community, Art and Nature Unite

The Assembly House is a work of light art that brings together community spirit, artistic expression, and nature. Inspired by the original idea of the Danish assembly houses, the artwork invites people to gather – not behind closed walls, but in forest, heath, and dune landscapes. The open structure interprets physical elements from traditional assembly houses: a handshake at the stairs, a flagpole, a speaker’s podium, and benches. You can walk on the sculpture, feel the floor vibrate, and listen to a sound collage inspired by the history of Danish assembly houses.

The sound collage features songs written specifically for the artwork, inspired by the Danish folk high school songbook and hymn traditions. Some songs explore broad themes such as freedom, society, and culture, while others are played at sunrise or sunset. The music appears in many forms and colors, staging a constant shift between the familiar and the unknown – yet strangely captivating. It includes solemn church organ tones, political neo-hymns, trombone fanfares, communal singing, and distant voices from years gone by.

The artists hope the sound experience will draw people into nature, and that the natural surroundings will introduce more people to sound art. Everyone is welcome to use the artwork as a meeting place, a stage, a podium, a destination – or something entirely different – and fill it with their own activities, memories, and experiences, just like the traditional assembly houses. The sound can be turned off during your event, allowing the sculpture to function as an open-air assembly house.
