Resen Church - Skive

Resen Church near Skive is a roadside church and is open on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Stop by and see The Crucifixion by Svend Havsteen-Mikkelsen, as well as a memorial plaque from 1756 dedicated to the noble Rosenkrantz family of Krabbesholm.

Resen Church presents itself as a Gothic longhouse without a separate chancel, featuring a western tower from the 15th century and a southern porch built in 1944. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the church once had both an apse and a charnel house. The oldest parts date back to the Romanesque period, though extensive renovations have left only a few traces, such as in the eastern gable.

Around 1590, the church was transformed into a Gothic longhouse with a beamed ceiling by Lady Magdalene Banner of Krabbesholm, who also installed the church’s windows. The whitewashed building is made of fieldstones with occasional ashlar blocks, and the south side is faced with monk bricks. The tower is built of monk bricks, though fieldstones were reused inside. On the east side, a bricked-up arched niche may be a remnant of a former chapel or sacristy.

The altarpiece and pulpit are elegant Rococo works from 1742. In 1983, the altarpiece was fitted with a painting by Sven Havsteen Mikkelsen titled “The Crucifixion.” The previous altarpiece from 1898 – a copy of Carl Bloch’s “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane” – remains preserved behind the altar. During the 1968 restoration, the tower room was incorporated into the church, and the 18th-century baptismal canopy was retrieved from the attic and restored.

The church served as the parish church for the owners of Krabbesholm. Inside, you’ll find a memorial plaque for Judge Jørgen Rosenkrantz and his wife Maria Elisabeth de Roglinge, erected by their son Verner Rosenkrantz. In the tower room stands a gravestone for Madame Else Rasmussen, wife of Hans Rasmussen – the first non-noble owner of Krabbesholm. The cemetery consists of two sections: the old parish graveyard and a shared cemetery for Skive and Resen, established in 1973.
