Hjortholm
Hjortholm is a partially flooded peninsula in the Limfjord, known for its Stone Age archaeological finds and diverse natural landscape. With shallow bays, deep waters, and scenic meadows, it’s a great spot for hiking and nature experiences.
On the peninsula of Hjortholm, which is partially flooded by the waters of the Limfjord, fascinating archaeological discoveries have been made. Among them is a shell midden containing mussel shells, indicating a Stone Age settlement from the Ertebølle culture around 4500 BC. These findings show that hunter-gatherers once lived here and made use of the area's rich natural resources.
The landscape around Hjortholm is diverse. On the western side of the bay, the water is very shallow, creating ideal conditions for birdlife and coastal meadows. In contrast, the northeastern side has deep waters, offering a completely different natural environment. From the sandy meadows west of Hjortholm, visitors can enjoy a scenic walk along the beach and bay, crossing over to the peninsula itself. It’s a perfect destination for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those seeking peace and historical insight in beautiful surroundings.
